Morning Workshops

Workshop 1: Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder**

Mark P. Faber, MD

DMDD is a mental disorder in children and adolescents characterized by a persistently irritable or angry mood and frequent temper outbursts that are disproportionate to the situation and significantly more severe than the typical reaction of same aged peers. Children with an history of chronic irritability are more likely to be diagnosed with disruptive mood dysregulation disorder.  This includes children who from a very young age have struggled to deal with frustration or adapt to change without losing their temper.  This workshop will review and address this disorder as it relates to children in the classroom setting.

Workshop 2: Trauma in Schools: Response Matters **

Amy Nolan, EdS, LPC, BCC

1 in 4 children experience trauma in their lives.  With natural disasters, rising suicide rates, school shootings and every day trauma-the aftermath continues to stall educational benchmarks and mental health recovery.  In this training we will explore how to identify the at-risk student, respond to traumatic events and ways schools can better respond while building resilience in their students and staff.

Workshop 3: Ethical Issues in the School^^

Brett Novick, MS, LMFT, CSSW

This workshop will examine current ethical issues facing SSW including mental health issues, confidentiality, risk and resiliency, and strategies for dealing with parents and administrators in the educational domain.  We’ll also explore how helping professionals in schools can help families access help for their children while maintaining ethical boundaries.  Specific case examples will be discussed including the rights of non-custodial parents and students who are 18 years old but still under parental care.

Afternoon Workshops

Workshop 4: School Anxiety and School Refusal **

Mark P. Faber, MD

School refusal is a problem for children, families and school personnel. This workshop will explore the significant short and long-term effects on children’s social, emotional and educational development; and the frequent association with comorbid psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression.  Assessment and management of SR requires a collaborative approach that includes the family physician, parents, and school staff; we will focus on the key role of the SSW in facilitating and maintaining appropriate interventions.

Workshop 5: Dealing with Angry Students and Tantrums Effectively ** – WORKSHOP FULL

Brett Novick, MS, LMFT, CSSW

How do we deal with students when they are annoyed, frustrated or otherwise irritated?  What works and what does not?  In this workshop, we will attempt to briefly look at the context that seems to foster these behaviors.  Then we will look at practical and simple tools that can be used immediately to decrease the incidents of tantrums and angry behaviors within the school setting. The goal is to supplement your existing tools with others you can quickly implement with students during their most challenging states.

Workshop 6: Emerging Drug Trends: What is Happening and How Can We Respond

Shevendu Sen, MD; Angela Conover, BA

This presentation will provide an overview of current drug trends and emerging threats to our youth including vaping, marijuana, underage drinking and the opioid crisis.  Attendees will learn about the prevalence of these issues impacting New Jersey’s youth and strategies to prevent and address them.
